And now the moment you have all been waiting for… or something.
I give you my endorsements for Houston’s City elections:
Mayor: Bill White
Up until about 3 weeks ago this was a surprisingly close one for me. I was impressed with Bill White when I first heard him speak back in May and he became my choice at that point. Since then, I have met Sylvester Turner on a couple of occasions, and I liked him. Even though I had a soft spot for Turner, the compelling reason for me to choose him over White never came. In the end, I had to go with who I thought would be the best manager for the city. I believe that Bill White is the guy for the job.
Controller (or is it comptroller): Annise Parker
The only politician I have met who remembers me each time I see her. That’s not why I am voting for her, but I honestly never considered another candidate for this seat. She is a Dean backer. That’s not why I am voting for her either, but it doesn’t hurt.
At Large 1: Brian Wozniak
A fellow Heights Democrat. I saw him speak once and he was the only Democrat contender for the seat that showed up for the for the forum I attended. We need the shaven-headed voice on city council
At Large 2: Gordon Quan
Never considered anyone else
At large 3: Peter Brown
This was the 2nd toughest decision for me to make. I really like Jolanda Jones. I was impressed by her energy and her desire to try to help the community through public service. With the infrastructure issues facing Houston, however, I just had to go with the experience that Peter Brown brings to the table. It didn’t hurt that he is also a nice guy and a Howard Dean supporter
At Large 4: Sue Lovell
Another toughie. I like Ron Green, but I think Sue Lovell brings the LGBT voice to city council and I think that is very important as Annise moves on to the Controller seat. Also another Dean backer (sense a trend here?) and a DNC delegate (both of which are important to us Dean folks in the upcoming primary)
At Large 5: Dwight Boykins
The only candidate for this seat I have seen speak. I liked what he had to say about education and community ties. I just liked the guy.
City Council District H: Either Diana Davila Martinez or Adrian Garcia
This one is still in the air for me. I probably won’t decide until I am hovering over the eSlate tomorrow. If I had to pick at this very moment, I would probably go with Martinez. I like her resume. I liked her when I met her. And again, she said she was a Dean supporter, so right now that’s the deciding factor. Maybe not a good one, but that’s what I will go with for now. For the record, Gonzalo Camacho (the real one, not the imposter) has commented on get donkey! a couple of times during the last few weeks. I sent him an email asking for his postions on three issues. I haven’t heard back from him yet. If I do, I will post what he has to say.
Metro: Yes!!
Firefighters right to organize: Yes
UPDATE — FWIW I didn’t go to any of the candidates I mentioned as Dean supporters and ask whether or not they supported Dean. They came to us (”us” being Dean campaign volunteers) usually at a Democratic Party event or a parade or festival that we were working at. All of the candidates praised our visiblilty, dedication, and organization. I think that the support of the candidates mentioned (and in some cases the requests for cross-campaigning) debunks one of the anti-Dean criticisms I have heard. That criticsm being that Dean will have no coattails in the National election because his anti-establishment/anti-Iraq war stances will make him a pariah for other candidates. I think that should he win the nomination, leveraging Dean’s grassroots organization is going to be very attractive to other candidates. The coattails will be there.

My roomie Thomas Zermeno is running for at large position 4…if he weren’t Sue would have my vote, and probably his too…
He’s been active with Indymedia and other activists groups for a LONG time and is not a politics as usual candidate…

Mike,
Either I did not get your email regarding the positions or I deleted it before reading it. Regardless, thanks for the effort and your interest.
For the record, I am supporting Diana Davila for District H.
…and thanks for addressing the camacho impostor. There are some strange characters out there.
