Will they or Won’t they?: Democrat style
In the month since the congressional recess the debate on the impending war with Iraq has “ratcheted up”. We have heard arguments for and against the war from republicans, former cabinet officials, former military leaders, and countless pundits. The most intriguing stories to date have been the rifts within the President’s own party, his administration, and the opposition of members of his father’s cabinet. The silence from almost all of congressional Democrats in congress, however, has been deafening (Rep. Kucinich-D-OH is the only Dem I can recall).
Now congress is back in session. Campaign season is in full swing. Will the debate cross the aisle? Will the war become a campaign issue?
I am not expecting a unified Democratic voice on this issue. I agree with Sen. Chuck Hagel R-Neb. (who currently opposes war, or at least suggests caution), who said that the war debate transcends political parties. It would be nice to hear some democratic voices in that debate, however.
